W is for Wands

When looking for inspiration for today’s post, I came across an article on Halloween food ideas in a parenting magazine I subscribe to.  One of the ideas included in the article was for Pastry Wands served with a pumpkin dip.  While we don’t yet celebrate Halloween in the threefootcook household, Bear and Bee do love Pastry Wands – or cheese straws as we usually call them.

Rather than making just cheese pastry wands which are our usual savoury variety, I decided we should try out a sweet version with raspberry jam.  The cheese pastry wands are delicious on their own but would also go nicely with tomato sauce or a pesto dip.  The jam pastry wands were a hit with just a dusting of icing sugar.

To make the pastry wands you will need:
1 sheet of ready-made puff pastry (We used the ones that come in a square rather than a long roll)
1 egg, lightly beaten
1-2 tablespoons of finely grated parmesan cheese, or another tasty cheese
1-2 tablespoons of raspberry jam

Preheat the oven to 200oC.
Place the puff pastry sheet on the bench and cut it in half.  For the cheese wands, brush a little of the egg over the pastry and then sprinkle on the cheese. The egg will help make the cheese stick and stick the pastry sheet together.

Fold pastry sheet in half for pastry wands
Fold one half of the pastry sheet over the other half and press gently to stick the two pieces together.

Gently twist each piece and place onto a lined baking tray.

Brush each wand with a little more of the egg.

Bake in the oven for 12-15 minutes. Remove wands from tray and allow to cool slightly.

Dust jam pastry wands with icing sugar.
For the jam wands, dust with a little icing sugar.
